Barnsley East MP Stephanie Peacock has today accused the Government of ‘hitting working families in Barnsley with a triple blow’ as the £1000 cut to Universal Credit takes effect today.

There are 10,140 Households claiming Universal Credit or Working Tax Credits in her constituency of Barnsley East, with 19,720 in Barnsley in total.

14,064 of these are households with children and many of these families are in work.

This is cutting £20,508,800 from families and the local economy in Barnsley, at a time when inflation, gas bills and taxes are rising.

Stephanie commented:

‘The Tories are hitting working families across Barnsley with a triple blow to the cost of living.

‘Todays cut to Universal Credit will devastate thousands of working families across Barnsley East, at a time when this government’s crises begin to bite even harder.

‘For many families it will now be a long and cold winter, as they’re left to choose between heating and eating. They deserve better than this.’
