The Government's latest u-turn is good news for British steel and shipyards. For the last few years, I've campaigned for the Government to buy British and support our world-class steel industry. At least 2,500 jobs will be secured by building Navy ships at home. https://www.mirror.co.uk/.../tories-finally-accept-navy...
I enjoyed visiting Age UK Barnsley's Men in Sheds - a great project where older men can come together to make things, have a laugh and chat.We talked about the support they've provided during COVID-19.Big thank you for the lovely bowl! https://www.ageuk.org.uk/barnsley/our-services/men-in-sheds/
It was lovely to pop into Barnsley independent bookshop, The Book Vault. I picked up the new Strike novel.
I had a good meeting recently with Councillor Chris Lamb and Dan Jarvis MP to discuss local flooding challenges. With some residents flooded twice in the last thirteen years, we need the Government to engage with flood-risk to Barnsley homes and businesses now. This meeting was an important step towards creating a more join-up local approach to flooding. It is clear, though, that the Government needs to do more to help flood-hit areas both locally and nationally to recover and to prevent future floods. I recently held the Secretary of State for DEFRA to account on the Government’s response to last winter’s floods. It’s unacceptable we haven't had Boris Johnson's promised SY Flood Summit. As Shadow Minister for Flooding I will continue to push for more support for flood-threatened communities both here in Barnsley and across the country. https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/stephaniepeacockcolumn
After years of campaigning alongside Johnny Wood, I welcome the Government's announcement that they will increase max sentences for dangerous driving to life. At every step, the justice system let Jackie's family down.We need tougher sentences & a functioning probation system now.You can watch my comments in Parliament here.
This month, the first people with Child Trust Funds will turn 18.Introduced by the last Labour Government, CTFs will make a real difference to millions of young people, including the nearly 9000 covered by the scheme in Barnsley East before it was abolished by the Tories in 2011.
Today marks Battle of Britain Day.On the 80th anniversary of a day which proved a decisive turning point in the Battle of Britain, we remember those who fought in the RAF and sacrificed so much to defend our freedom, including those from Barnsley. https://www.rafbf.org/battle-of-britain
I met with the National Infrastructure Commission to discuss flood prevention and defences. Last year, businesses and homes across South Yorkshire, and the rest of the country, were devastated by floods. https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/opinion/columnists/flooding-response-still-inadequate-seven-months-later-stephanie-peacock-2905346

I asked the Government to explain why they still haven’t held the SY Flood Summit promised last November. My Q was to the Secretary of State. He couldn’t be bothered to listen, let alone answer.Instead the Minister made excuses for him and Boris Johnson , refusing to set a date. You can watch my question in Parliament here.
