In 1866 the worst mining disaster in English history took place at the Oaks Colliery – 383 men lost their lives.

Today I attended an event at the NUM to remember the victims.

Over 1000 men lost their lives working down the pit at the Oaks Colliery over the years. Dave Cherry’s film showing today focused on the 1847 disaster.

He has made a number of films that illustrate our town’s mining heritage & remember the men who died going to work.
