On a visit to the Old Moor RSPB site Barnsley East’s MP discussed the fantastic role the RSPB plays in preserving wildlife in the area and encouraging locals to get involved.

She learnt about the RSPB’s Great Garden Birdwatch which took place 28th-30th January.

For an hour over the weekend, the RSPB encouraged keen bird watchers and beginners alike to count all the birds they see in their garden, their balcony or their local park.

The RSPB has reported that the UK has lost over 38 million birds in the UK in the past 50 years, initiatives like the Great Garden Birdwatch aims to raise awareness about the conservation work done by the RSPB.

Stephanie Peacock commented:

‘It was great to visit the RSPB Old Moor site today. The RSPB does fantastic work to encourage people to get involved in nature and to learn more wildlife. Fun and free family-friendly activities like the Great Garden Birdwatch are a really great way to get involved.

‘Access to nature and to nice outdoor spaces has always been important, however the pandemic has shown just how needed they are. Local residents are lucky to have such a great site to meet friends, family and to explore nature on their doorstep.’
